2. ST. SERF'S CHURCH.

Exactly when he lived is uncertain - perhaps in the 5th century - but St Serf was an historic figure, a dynamic Christian journeying to several parts of Scotland to bring the faith. He built a cell or small chapel in Dunning, and the greatest miracle attributed to him is said to have occurred here. It is claimed that armed only with a staff, he slew a dragon which was terrorising the inhabitants from its den above the village. Today part of the village is known as The Dragon (pronounced dray'-gon). St. Serf died in Dunning and was buried in Culross. The handsome steeple of the church bearing his name has only one equal, in Muthill, also in Strathearn. A clock was added to the steeple in the early 1800's - it had been in use in Stirling Castle - and other clocks have since replaced it. The square clock seen here was photographed about 1890.
