Crossroads and Characters

Crossroads pic26

26. AFTER THE ROLLOS.

Until the 1900's the farm on the northern edge of Dunning Parish where this photo was taken belonged to the Rollo family. The farm and its handsome house are called Masterfield. They were rented by the man riding in the cart in this photo, James Morris, whose father had also been a tenant farmer here.

The Rollos needed money and various properties were put up for sale, including Masterfield. In this case, the tenant Morris was able to buy it.

Masterfield lies close to Dalreoch which we are told means in the old tongue King's Land, dating back to the Scottish kings at Forteviot. And very recently, Masterfield had another indirect association with royalty: for a period of time it was owned by Mrs. Frances Shand Kydd, the mother of Princess Diana.
